Laconica Web Based Installer Updated
I realized I hadn’t checked in on Laconica for awhile now, so I went ahead and updated the installer to make sure it was grabbing the latest and greatest version of the software. I tested it over on http://laconica.gimmesoda.com/

I also realized I never gave instructions for the installer. Here is the super quick rundown:
1) Upload the install.php and the installer folder to the location you want to install laconica. BUG NOTICE: For people who try to install into directories instead of the root folder, sorry it currently doesn’t work, I’ve already fixed this in the latest version of the GimmeSoda installer class but I haven’t pushed it into the laconica installer yet.
2) Access the install.php page
3a) Name your laconica install
3b) Put in the instal’s URL without the http! (ex: laconica.gimmesoda.com)
3c) Leave the directory blank since this isn’t working properly yet. (I’ll push the fix out real soon I promise!)
4) Fill in the mysql information for this install.
5) Click the test requirements button, if your install requirements pass then the system will automatically attempt to download and install laconica.
6) ENJOY!
I’ve gotten reports that this installer works on BlueHost and a few VPS setups as well as DreamHost. Let me know if you run into trouble or have any successful install!

To my knowledge there isn’t an admin login for the front-end of laconica. Just create your own account and use the system. You should definitely read over the README file that gets installed with the laconica system though, it’s great when you need to figure out what to do next, not to mention all the config options that are available to you.

Chances are the changes that have been made to the system are large enough to be non-compatible with the installer. I’ve got the day off work tomorrow and plan on fixing a few bugs, improving the overall code to the installer class, and making sure it’s installing the latest version.
Thanks for the report about HostGator btw! Good to know it’s working, now I just need to get these MediaTemple problems solved and most hosts should be pretty much compatible.

I used your script to install onto DH (Amazingly easy!)
However, when I try to use the API while the site is in private mode ($config['site']['private'] = true;) the authentication just doesn’t work, I use the correct username/PW but it simply returns me to the authentication prompt. I’m trying to get this working on Twhirl, which uses the API, but for some reason this just doesn’t work. I’ve seen it working on other installs and have tried everything I can think of. Any thoughts?

Sorry Twill! Unfortunately I still don’t know enough about laconica’s source to be able to tell you what the cause of something like this would be. You should head over to laconi.ca and check the bug tracker, there may be an open bug regarding this. Beyond that it’s always good to check with the dev list.

Thank you so much for the installler, it worked fine on AptHost. Laconica is a nice script and it is free, but the author fails to realize that not everyone has shell access, I would say 99% still use FTP. I’d give your installer a 99 out of 100 only because you are still working on the sub-directory part. Laconica still needs a “back end” as well and better documentation. Great job and thanks again!

Very cool installer but maybe I am missing something. What is the actual admin login for the front-end? I think it’s obvious but I am sure missing it. Thanks for packaging this up and making it so easy btw!!!
